Weighing and Balancing in Science Class

Last week we started an exciting new theme in Science: weighing and balancing! We'll be working with this topic for several weeks in all the first-grade classes and were very excited to launch into the first experiment.
The students were given sturdy printouts of butterflies, which they cut out. Next, they received un-sharpened pencils and some paper clips. Their mission for this Science class was to figure out how to balance their butterfly on top of the un-sharpened pencil, and then to explore how adding paper clips to different parts of the butterfly's wings would change the balance point. They used real scientist terms like hypothesis and result to write about their outcomes.

It was a fun and challenging way to start us off with thinking about balancing, and the students finished by coloring their butterflies and adding them to the classroom wall.
